The journey

Two sides of Rwanda, with enough room to feel each one.

This route begins in the open savannah of Akagera, where a private guide can shape each game drive around wildlife movement and your energy on the day. It then crosses Rwanda through Kigali to the volcanic north, where the pace deliberately slows for gorilla trekking and time to enjoy the lodge landscape.

Gorilla permits and flight timing guide the final routing. We will confirm what is available for your dates, discuss whether you would prefer a refined mid-range lodge, private luxury or a high-end stay, and make sure the journey feels coherent from arrival to departure.

Day by day

The rhythm of the route.

Each day is designed to make the wildlife experiences feel spacious rather than hurried.

Day 01

Arrival in Kigali: an easy beginning

Arrive in Kigali and meet your private driver-guide for a calm transfer to your chosen city hotel. Depending on your arrival time, we can arrange a gentle orientation, a considered dinner reservation or simply leave the evening clear so you can rest before the safari begins. Your guide will confirm the route ahead and answer the practical questions that matter.

Day 02

Kigali to Akagera: into Rwanda’s eastern savannah

After breakfast, travel east toward Akagera National Park in a private vehicle. The changing landscape is part of the experience, moving from city and cultivated hills into open country. Settle into your lodge, then take an afternoon game drive that introduces the park at an unforced pace, with time to return for sundowners and dinner.

Day 03

Akagera: private game drive and lake time

Start at first light, when the cool air and softer light make the savannah especially rewarding. Your guide will follow current sightings rather than a rigid circuit, allowing time for elephants, buffalo, antelope, birds and predators when conditions permit. Later, choose a slower water-based experience or a relaxed afternoon at the lodge before another quiet evening in the park.

Day 04

Akagera to Volcanoes: Kigali stop and volcanic country

Leave Akagera after breakfast and travel via Kigali toward the north-west. We plan this as a genuine transition day, with a comfortable stop for lunch and time to arrive at your Volcanoes lodge before dark. The volcanic landscape, cool air and forest-edge setting immediately change the mood of the journey; tonight is for rest, a good meal and preparation for the trek.

Day 05

Volcanoes National Park: mountain gorilla trekking

After an early breakfast, attend the park briefing before your allocated gorilla trek. Trek duration and terrain vary with the gorilla family’s location, and the pace is set with the guide team in the forest. The hour spent with the gorillas is extraordinary; afterwards, return to the lodge to recover, enjoy the setting and keep the rest of the day deliberately light.

Day 06

A second Volcanoes day, designed around you

Use today for a second gorilla trek, golden-monkey tracking, a gentle community experience or simply more time at a very special lodge. We recommend this extra night because it gives the experience depth and protects the itinerary from feeling like a single high-pressure activity. Your final plan will reflect permit availability and your preferred pace.

Day 07

Volcanoes to Kigali: onward travel with time in hand

After a relaxed final breakfast, return privately to Kigali. We time the departure around your flight or build in a final city experience if your schedule allows. The route can also be extended into Nyungwe, Lake Kivu, Uganda or a wider East Africa safari when you have more time.

Before you decide

Useful answers for this Rwanda safari.

Are gorilla permits included in the planning range?

Permit arrangements are discussed separately and confirmed against availability. We show the per-person, per-day travel range clearly so you can understand the accommodation and service level first.

Is a second gorilla trek necessary?

Not always. One trek can be deeply meaningful; a second can offer more forest time and flexibility. We will advise based on your interests, budget, fitness and the flow of the route.

Can this be a luxury or high-end Rwanda safari?

Yes. The route works particularly well with elevated lodge choices in Akagera and Volcanoes, private transfers and a more generous pace around the trekking experience.
