The journey

Migration country is worth planning with patience.

This route gives the northern Serengeti enough time to feel like a destination rather than a quick attempt at a Mara River crossing. You fly into the area that makes sense for your dates, stay for three nights in or near northern Serengeti, then travel through the park at a considered pace before finishing with Ngorongoro Crater. Each move has a purpose; none is presented as a short transfer when it is not.

The Great Migration is a natural movement shaped by rainfall and grazing. River crossings cannot be guaranteed, and a good luxury safari should not pretend otherwise. Instead, we use current wildlife information, select a suitable camp area and give your private guide the time to respond to what is actually happening. Even when the herds shift, northern Serengeti remains remarkable for its landscapes, resident wildlife and sense of space.

Luxury here means more than the lodge. It is the calm of a route that makes sense, the freedom to stay with a sighting, the right flight timing, and accommodation chosen for privacy, setting and service—not simply a label.

Day by day

The complete route.

Stay suggestions are shown as names only. We confirm live availability and explain the best matching option for your dates before booking.

Day 01

Arrive in Arusha and begin with a calm first evening

Meet our team at Kilimanjaro Airport or your Arusha hotel, then transfer to a carefully selected lodge for a quiet first night. This day is deliberately uncomplicated: a comfortable room, a good dinner and time to recover from the flight are more valuable than forcing in an unnecessary activity. Your safari briefing covers the route, luggage for the light aircraft, likely temperatures and the pace of the days ahead. You start with clarity rather than a rushed early-morning handover.

Day 02

Fly to northern Serengeti and begin in Mara River country

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your light-aircraft flight to the northern Serengeti. Your selected landing point—often Kogatende, Lamai or another appropriate airstrip—is confirmed around your camp and current flight schedule. Meet your private guide on arrival and begin the game-drive transfer through Mara River country. This first drive is not merely transport: it is time to take in the broad northern landscape, wildlife around the riverine areas and the atmosphere of a more remote Serengeti stay. Settle into camp, then head out again if arrival timing and light make it worthwhile.

Day 03

Full private day in northern Serengeti

Set out early, while the light is soft and the day is still cool. Your guide shapes the route around fresh sightings, tracks, herd movement and the preferences you have discussed—not a fixed loop. Depending on conditions, you may spend time along the Mara River, work the open northern plains or follow wildlife through quieter riverine woodland. If migration herds are in the area, the day can give them patient attention; if they are elsewhere, the northern Serengeti still delivers cats, elephant, giraffe, birdlife and magnificent space. Return to camp for lunch or carry a picnic, entirely according to your pace.

Day 04

A second northern day with the freedom to wait well

Give the north another full day. This is where private guiding makes a material difference: you can revisit a promising area at a different time, stay quietly at a wildlife sighting, focus on photography or take the day more slowly with a long camp lunch between two drives. Mara River crossings are never scheduled; they are natural events that may or may not happen while you are nearby. Our aim is not to manufacture expectation, but to place you well, give you time and make the broader wildlife experience excellent in its own right.

Day 05

Travel south through Serengeti to the central plains

After breakfast, begin the journey south through the park. This is a proper safari day, not a rapid transfer: the drive covers distance, and the route is planned with a picnic, wildlife stops and a realistic camp arrival. The scenery shifts gradually from northern river country towards the central plains, offering a wider sense of the Serengeti ecosystem than a flight-only route. Your guide will use the best of the day for sightings and keep the final approach to camp comfortable, so you arrive with time to settle in and enjoy the evening.

Day 06

Central Serengeti wildlife, then the Ngorongoro highlands

Enjoy an early central Serengeti drive before beginning the route east towards the Ngorongoro highlands. This section can include excellent resident wildlife—lion territory, kopjes, river valleys and plains—before the landscape rises towards the crater rim. We plan the day around the location of your central camp, your selected highland lodge and the pace that feels good to you. Arrive in time to experience the change in altitude and temperature, enjoy dinner and prepare for a very early crater descent.

Day 07

Early Ngorongoro Crater descent and departure

Descend into Ngorongoro Crater early, when the floor is cool and the wildlife day can unfold before the busiest part of the morning. Your private guide works across grassland, woodland and wetland areas with time for a carefully chosen picnic break. The crater is beautifully concentrated, but we avoid treating it as a checklist: the experience is shaped around your interests and the sightings of the day. Ascend in the afternoon, then continue to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward travel. If your flight timing is too tight for a comfortable finish, we recommend an extra night rather than create unnecessary pressure.

Before you decide

Useful answers, stated clearly.

Will we see a Mara River crossing?

River crossings are natural events and cannot be guaranteed. We position the route and camp around your travel period, use current movement information and give you enough northern time to experience the area properly. The itinerary has value well beyond one crossing sighting.

Are the prices shown a total trip cost?

No. The figures are planning ranges per person, per day. Your proposal is priced around the exact season, group size, selected camps, flights and services.

Can we stay longer in the northern Serengeti?

Yes. Adding one or two northern nights is often the right decision for guests whose priority is the migration, Mara River country or a slower luxury safari rhythm.

Can this end with Zanzibar?

Yes. We can arrange an internal connection from the Serengeti or Arusha, then build a beach stay that gives the safari a proper finish rather than an awkward transfer day.
